The concept behind Madam Wong is to create a setting reminiscent of 1920s Shanghai, combining it with a contemporary aesthetic. Located in an unsuspecting alley, once patrons step inside, they are transported to a different time and place. The interior design aims to offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing the architectural constructions of old Shanghai.
The sumptuous material palette of Madam Wong adds to its luxurious setting. Red brick, dark leather, and accents of metal finishes create an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication. The use of red as a central motif brings warmth to the space and highlights the unique architectural features.
Designed by Another Tales Studio, Madam Wong spans across 263 square meters and is split over two levels, offering moments of privacy for its patrons. The bar provides an intimate space for guests to sit back, relax, and enjoy their drinks.
The design of Madam Wong was not without its challenges. Located in a 30+ year-old cinema site and next to a back alley of a night club, the construction work had to be carefully executed to ensure a cozy and isolated environment. The team had to overcome the difficulties of working in an old building and prevent sound from traveling from the adjacent night club.
Madam Wong was completed in 2018 in Ipoh, Malaysia. The design team, led by Mon Lim and Miru Lim, conducted extensive research to capture the essence of 1920s Shanghai while infusing it with contemporary elements. The result is a bar that offers a unique and immersive experience for its patrons.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. The award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of Madam Wong, which authentically captures the spirit of the past while incorporating modern design practices. It is a testament to the technical and creative skills of the design team and their contribution to enhancing the quality of life through innovative design.
